Creative Teaching in the Adult Classroom

Improve and extend your teaching techniques and language ability.

These intensive 2-week courses have regular fixed start dates during the year and are eligible for EU LLP Grundtvig grants.

These courses are ideal for overseas teachers of English to young adults and adults who would like to refresh their teaching methodology and to make friends and contacts from other parts of the world.

Courses in July and August 2012 will be held in the beautiful, modern premises of Oxford University Business School 2 minutes' walk from the Lake School building in Park End Street. If you're a summer course participant please check this link for important information about your course at the Oxford University Business School venue.

Creative Teaching in the Adult Classroom
Hours per week 21 + weekly cultural and social activities
Class Size 14 maximum, 12 average
Language Level Intermediate (CEFR Level B1) or above
Course Length 2 weeks

Course content includes:

  • creative ideas to make your classes more lively and interactive
  • practical activities for teaching large classes
  • language improvement to refresh and update your English
  • a visit to/presentation by a Local Adult Education Provider (where possible)
  • a guided historical tour of Oxford
  • a guided tour of Christchurch College or Punting on the River Thames
  • one social evening with tutors
  • wireless LAN Internet access
  • refreshments: tea, coffee and mineral water
  • end of course certificate outlining sessions attended

All participants are required to fill in a Pre-Course questionnaire. The Course Co-ordinator plans the course to meet the special requirements of the group. The course content is outlined and discussed on the first morning, and is then adapted as appropriate.

Where possible, visits in the local community are arranged. Some groups on summer courses also choose to attend an outdoor Shakespeare production in Oxford Castle or an Oxford University College garden. Course participants at other times of year often enjoy attending plays or concerts in theatres and music venues across the city.

Course tutors and guest trainers

Participants experience a dynamic, interactive style of teaching and receive personal attention from friendly, approachable tutors and guest trainers who have substantial experience of teaching English as a foreign language and teacher training. Trainers integrate a wide range of online and off-line resources to create a stimulating, professional and supportive learning environment and will adapt the content of the course to suit the needs and interests of the group, so that it is useful, relevant and enjoyable.

Comenius-Grundtvig Funding, Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP)

These courses are eligible for EU LLP Grundtvig grants.

Then you should send your completed application form, pre-registration and course information back to your National Agency, who will assess your application.

Follow-up resources and support

Each participant will take away a collection of practical activities they can use in their classrooms and share with their colleagues.

All teachers on our Professional Development Courses are invited to join us on Twitter @EnglishinOxford where you can share teaching ideas, classroom questions and thoughts on English with colleagues and friends.

Everything was just perfect: the teachers, trainers, the other colleagues, the place, the course, the materials and the inspiring ideas as well as the homestay! I would recommend it to everyone!
